Diabetes is emerging as a leading non-communicable disease worldwide and has already affected around 9.3% of the world adult population. It is estimated that around 535 million people worldwide are suffering from diabetes of which 72.4 million people are in India alone. Every six seconds a person dies of diabetes.
Diabetes is the major cause of preventable blindness, amputations, kidney failure and is a significant contributor for cardio-vascular morbidity and mortality. However, if the disease is managed well, all these complications can be prevented/ postponed.
A person with diabetes can lead a normal life, provided they are educated about their condition by advising about lifestyle modification and undergo periodic screening for complications so that corrective measures can be taken at the earliest. This cannot be done by an individual medical practitioner. It requires a joint effort by a team comprising of Diabetologist, Dietician, Podiatrist, Eye, Foot Specialists, Nephrologist, urologist, cardiologist and other super specialists. There are abundant such Institutions worldwide. In India, however, there are no such Institutions in the Government sector. There is a dearth not only in trained manpower but also availability of such facilities affordable to the common man.
To fill this void, the state Government of Karnataka has taken the lead and has established “Karnataka Institute of Diabetology" in 2007 later renamed as “Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology and Research” in the year 2016.
This is a unique Institute meant for Diabetes with an aim of providing single stop solution for all Diabetic problems like treatment, Diagnosis, education, training and research under one roof.
To this end, the Institute has already recruited qualified staff, trained them in Institutes of excellence in India. The Institute now boasts of Diabetologists, Dieticians, Podiatrists, Vitreo Retina Specialists, Nephrologist and a Cardiologist in its team.
It has already chartered out future plans and prepared educational literature for the benefit of the public. It has also procured the latest and advanced equipment for treating Diabetes and the related eye/foot nerve related complications.
Understanding the huge discrepancy in the availability of such advanced health care among the urban and rural populations, the institute has started full-fledged diabetic care services at Malur/ Sathanur villages. These facilities are appreciated and overwhelming, used by the public.
The Institute has commenced its full-fledged outpatient facilities at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology campus with effect from 28.01.2009.
OPD facility: The patients who visit OPD are evaluated in all depts without making propaganda and advertisements just by the word of mouth the number of patients visiting this OPD has been consistently around 100 patients a day right from the day of inauguration. Now the number of patients has reached 150 to 200 per day. So far, this Institute has treated more than 1,42,000 index patients.
Outreach activity: The Institute firmly believes in taking the diabetic care and treatment to the door steps of the patients. As a first step in this direction doctors visited every week two centers located at Sathnur and Malur and provide diabetic care.
Apart from its core competence in individualized patient care, the Institute also plans to start training courses both for medical and paramedical staff to alleviate the shortage of skilled man power. It also plans to conduct CME (Continued Medical Education) programmes in diabetes, undertake basic and advanced research and act as a rich resource of essential data in the concerned field.
It also aims at collaborating with similar institutions in India/ Abroad for personnel training, research, education and public awareness campaigns.
The Institute would also extend itself to collect data about diabetes and related complications to compile and formulate the data in order to aid in planning future projects and programmes. The Institute is positive that with such ideas and ideals it would soon become one of the premier Institute with worldwide recognition.
The Institute is proud to place on record that the staff of the Institute are very courteous to the patients guiding them at every stage during their visit to OPD. Staff has been sensitized to interact with patients with a sense of service and dedication as this would go a long way in bringing good name to the Institute.
New Campus: With the persistent efforts of the Director and the generosity of the Government the Institute has been sanctioned 06 acres and 10 guntas of land in Indiranagar Bengaluru. The Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology and Research was shifted from Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology campus to the new state of the art building at Indiranagar, Old Madras Road, Near Swami Vivekananda Road Metro station, Bengaluru on 25-10-2021.
