Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology & Research, KIER is one of the premier institutes in the state of Karnataka which offers ‘Holistic Diabetic Care’ under one roof. Established in the year 2007 under the leadership of Dr. K.R. Narasimha Setty in the name of Karnataka Institute of Diabetology, the institute continues to provide diabetic care to not only patients from Karnataka but also to patients across the nation. The Institute was rechristened as Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology & Research in the year 2016 with the aim of providing world class diabetes and endocrinology care to patients and to conduct research activities. The Institute has taken further step to start speciality training in the department of Podiatry, (Diabetic footcare and surgery), Medical Vitreo retinal care and diabetes.
With this in mind multiple short term training courses have been started to train medical professionals in taking care of diabetics across the nation. The details of the courses below. Interested candidates may kindly make use of this facility and also make this information available to professionals who might be interested in taking up these branches for their future practice. These short-term courses will help them in getting accustomed to the different challenges in the respective fields and also help them in learning recent advantages from specialists in these fields.
The different short-term courses available are:
1. Diabetology
- 3 months short term course
- 1-month observer ship
Qualification: Post MBBS and Post MD/ DNB)
2. Podiatry (Diabetic foot care)
- 3-month short term course
- 1 month / 1-week observer ship
(Qualification: Post MS and Diploma)
Clinical visitors – 2 weeks (As selected by Candidate)
3. Vitreo-retina (Ophthalmology)
- 3-month short term course
- 1-month observer ship
(Qualification: Post MS and Diploma)
CENTRE & FACILITIES:
The programme will take place in Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology & Research at the respective departments of Specialization. The candidate will be exposed to around 150 – 200 patients in a day. Seminars will be conducted regularly in Diabetology and allied subjects.
The Department of Podiatry consists of Podiatry Lab for evaluation of Diabetic feet, Debridement room where the different surgical procedures are undertaken and “Advanced Wound Care Centre” where the advanced modalities of wound care are used for further management of Diabetic foot cases. The Department of Podiatry consists of advanced modalities like TCPO2, O2C, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, Laser therapy, Pedoscan, In-shoe Pedography etc. Every day around 100 -130 patients are seen in the department with 10-15 surgical procedures and around 20-30 diabetic feet evaluation.
The Department of Vitreo- Retina consists of two qualified Vitreo-retinal specialists who will be training the candidate in identifying the different problems associated with Diabetes. The department consists of advanced modalities like Pascal laser, Heidelberg OCT and fundus fluorescein angiography, Kowa fundus camera, B Scan, Octopus perimetry and I care tonometer.
ELIGIBILITY:
Candidates applying for the respective courses should have a Post MBBS, Post MD/DNB for Diabetology and Post M.S. and Diploma for Podiatry and Medical Vitreo Retina degree from a recognized University.
PLAN OF TRAINING:

Patient’s consultations and counseling (New patients, Review patients and Wound care)

Performance and interpretation of diagnostic procedures

Surgical and clinical therapeutics performance

Training seminars and presentation of clinical cases
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
The candidate under the supervision will be taught to design and develop research projects in the field of diabetic foot, Vitreo-retina and Diabetology/ Endocrinology.
- ACCOMODATION & MAINTENANCE:
The programme does not provide for accommodation and maintenance of the candidate. The candidate will have to arrange for the same.
